Indian badminton team for Asian Games 2026: Expectations and challenges

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has officially announced a 20-player squad for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. The squad covers all five disciplines and is led by two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and the top men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who are expected to contend for gold. The team includes four members from the 2026 Hangzhou Asian Games silver-winning men's team: Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and Arjun Ramachandran, as well as several Thomas Cup 2026 bronze medalists. Tactically, India's strength lies in attacking play, with Sindhu's height and power and the Satwik-Chirag duo's aggressive style. The coaching staff includes Gopichand along with Indonesian Irwansyah and Malaysian Tan Kim Her, a strategic move to boost doubles expertise. However, analyst Amelia Thomas warns of over-reliance on the key pair and age-related risks for veterans.
