EuroLeague 2026-27 Power Rankings: When Money Cannot Buy a Home Court

Olympiacos enters the 2026-27 season as reigning EuroLeague champions, carrying a paradox no power ranking reflects: for most of the campaign, they may not play on their actual home court. The new arena is expected to be ready only around the playoff race. While waiting, players train at SEF and play their home games at AEK Athens' arena.

A trivial detail? It is an accumulated loss. A EuroLeague season runs from October to May across nearly forty rounds. Playing a dozen games on someone else's floor, in front of someone else's crowd, never shows up in a stat sheet, yet it lives inside every fourth-quarter possession.

I do not listen to what they say in front of the camera. I listen to what they say after the lights go out. After the lights go out, nobody talks about payroll. They talk about where they will sleep in March.

Context: one ranking, one starting line

Eurohoops publishes exactly one set of Power Rankings per season, placed at the starting line. That convention makes sense. Before the ball goes up, all we have is theory, and theory needs a format for argument. Summer friendlies offer hints about conditioning and tactical ideas, but they say nothing about how a roster endures six months of continuous travel.

About six weeks into the season, power rankings lose their value. The standings, a far more objective measure, take over. That is why the season's only ranking matters only in the brief window between training camp and the opening round.

In 2027, the EuroLeague is expected to split into two conferences. Every current power model, built on the assumption that everyone plays everyone, will then have to be rewritten. For this season, this is the picture at the starting line.

The leading group: four names and one gap

Panathinaikos owns the most expensive roster of the season, a legendary coach on the bench, a clear title ambition, and a preseason injury list long enough to worry about. But in a league where money buys depth, owning the most expensive roster remains the most practical definition of power. That is why Panathinaikos sits first, even though they have never taken the floor at full strength.

Olympiacos, the champions, kept their core and added important pieces such as Montero. Purely on basketball, they are the most complete construction in the league. The arena problem, however, is the single largest variable in this entire ranking, and money cannot solve it.

Real Madrid won the Super Cup, turned the page under Pedro Martínez, and gained extra motivation from losing the Athens final. Yet the two eternal rivals of Greek basketball currently stand at least one step ahead. The gap is small, but in a league where four teams are often separated by a single game, small is everything.

Fenerbahçe sits in an awkward spot: hard to imagine outside the title contenders, harder to rank above Panathinaikos, Olympiacos and Real Madrid. That does not mean they cannot finish above all of them, only that we lack evidence to believe it.

The new-money tier: Dubai and the price of a map

Dubai enters its second season differently. After a somewhat timid debut, they showed their financial resources and built a top-tier roster aiming at least at the Final Four. The problem is not roster quality. The problem is the map: flying across Europe and living on planes is a physical toll no ranking quantifies.

And if Iran-Israel tensions escalate, Dubai could end up playing in Sarajevo again. The richest team in the league may be the one most dependent on geopolitics. Every transfer has three versions: the story the public hears, the story the club tells, and the truth that never gets published. For Dubai, the third version includes the flight schedule.

The playoff tier: where the season is decided

Žalgiris is the clearest example of one player reshaping an entire structure. In a league of small lineups, having a center like Jonas Valančiūnas makes an enormous difference at both ends. Even with less firepower, Žalgiris is usually in the playoff race, and this year they are more than an outsider.

Hapoel has a deep roster. Despite off-court noise, they reached the playoffs last season and are expected back. Playing home games in Bulgaria must be factored in, and in last season's playoff series against Real Madrid it was decisive.

The Serbian side has a chance at the playoffs after reaching the play-in last season. After dominating the Basketball Champions League, coach Ibon Navarro has a real opportunity to make an impression in the EuroLeague, with the right tools in hand. Belgrade's home advantage is obvious enough that opponents plan around it.

Anadolu Efes offers an intriguing mix: Pablo Laso's first true season in Istanbul, with Mike James as the focal point. A coach with a clear system plus a player who can score 25 on any night is enough to target the playoffs.

Valencia is a team we will never underestimate again. Last season's lesson stands. Despite major roster changes, they remain the club that makes rankings look foolish, exactly as TJ Shorts once made all of Europe look again in Paris.

The middle and the bottom: Barcelona step back, Virtus try to survive

Barcelona took a step back this summer as the competitive floor rose. They will fight for the playoffs, with no guarantee of reaching them. Maccabi faces the same question: with Tel Aviv as home, the answer is probably yes; with Belgrade, it leans no.

Then comes the group that improved on paper, with a playoff-calibre roster and a recent history of chronic injuries that keeps them outside. This is the kind of team every ranking loves in September and forgets by April. Monaco, after a drama-filled season, has a chance to be steadier and fight for more, though not for the playoffs, given the level of competition.

ASVEL will be watched across Europe simply because it is Tony Parker's first season as head coach. What is certain: this is not the roster he imagined in early summer, and even a playoff berth looks distant.

Bayern Munich pursues a sustainable model without heavy spending. Even so, Anton Gavel is a first-class coach who can build something with limited resources. Paris thinks the same way, and the plan once worked with Splitter on the bench. That roster was stripped two summers ago; Paris is rebuilding a group that defies expectations.

Beşiktaş could theoretically sit higher. But the EuroLeague is a completely different proposition from the EuroCup. If a newcomer does not spend even excessively on players in its first elite season, things can get extremely difficult. Baskonia will have flashes, but its main goal remains avoiding last place. Virtus Bologna, on paper, may own the weakest roster in the EuroLeague; despite its history, not becoming a punching bag is the most realistic target.

The contrarian read: where this ranking is wrong

The ranking assumes money buys power and that every team competes under equivalent conditions. The second assumption fails badly this season.

The blind spot is that four teams in this ranking, Olympiacos, Dubai, Hapoel and Maccabi, do not play on real home courts. For Olympiacos it is a building under construction. For the other three it is geopolitics and logistics. Four of the EuroLeague's twenty teams lack a true home court, a ratio unprecedented at the top level of European club basketball. Any forecasting model that ignores this variable is measuring something other than what will happen on the floor.

The next blind spot is injury luck. Panathinaikos has the best roster and the longest injury list. Both facts are true, and they contradict each other all through October. Like Croatia in 2026: history belongs not to the side with the most stars, but to the side with the most convincing story, and in club basketball that story is often written by the medical room.

The remaining blind spot is structural. The 2027 conference split will change how clubs allocate resources, and some decisions this summer, about roster depth and travel load, are being made with next season in mind. Rankings cannot see that.

At 54, I no longer look for answers. I look for the right question for each game. And the right question for the 2026-27 EuroLeague season is not who is strongest on paper, but who can endure six months of travel without losing themselves.

Variables for the next game

The Olympiacos arena timeline: if it slips, the title race opens. Dubai's road win rate over the first two months. How many games Panathinaikos plays at full strength. And Valencia's position after ten rounds, because if they sit in the upper half again, we will know the theoretical rankings have still learned nothing.
